The Florence Museum of Art, Science and
History is proud to announce that Chick-fil-A is sponsoring
the 56th Annual Pee Dee Regional Art Competition presented
by the Florence Museum Board of Trustees. The Pee Dee
Regional is the oldest art competition in the state of South
Carolina. Entries to the competition will be accepted Friday
and Saturday, July 17 & 18 at the Florence Museum, 558
Spruce St. between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. An

The Pee Dee Regional
Competition highlights the best contemporary art in the
twelve county eastern region of South Carolina that includes
Florence, Darlington, Chesterfield, Dillon, Georgetown,
Horry, Marion, Sumter, Marlboro, Williamsburg, Lee and
Kershaw counties.
This
year’s judge for the competition is Beth Grabowski,
Professor and Assistant Chair of the University of North
Carolina, Chapel Hill Art Department. Professor Grabowski
holds a B.A. from the University of Virginia and received
her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has
received three North Carolina Arts Council Awards. Her work
has been represented in national and international venues
including the American segment of the 5th Biennial of
Slovene Graphic Arts in Novo Mesto, Slovenia. Professor
Grabowski's prints, drawings, and artist books are included
in numerous public and private collections.
Awards
will be presented at the opening party to be held the
evening of August 27. First place will is a cash award of
$600, second place is $400, and third place is $250. There
are four Honorable Mention awards for $65 and a JoAnn Fender
Scarborough People’s Choice award of $50 which is voted upon
that evening by all of the attendees of the opening
reception.
Each
artist may submit up to four pieces in any medium. The works
must be hand delivered to the Florence Museum on September
12 & 13, before 4 p.m. There is a fee of $12.50 per entry
but Florence Museum members may submit two free entries.
Since
2000 Chick-fil-A has partnered with the Florence Museum to
underwrite a major art competition. Their commitment to
support the arts and culture in the region is an important
example of Pee Dee area businesses that help enhance the
quality of life through art and culture in the Pee Dee.
